ECO BEACH

There are no mod-cons, newspapers, televisions or telephones (unless you bring your mobile). Shops are non-existent and you don't have to worry about traffic because vehicles are banned. But, if peace and quiet are what you want then Eco Beach is the ideal place, just simply relax and make the world go away.

Stress free, opened in September, the 20 two-storey Eco Beach log cabins overlook Roebuck Bay near the spectacular red sandstone cliffs to Cape Villeret, south of Broome. The resort has been designed to set a new standard for environmental responsibility among tourism accommodation venues in Australia. Environmental considerations have been given top priority to create an ecologically sustainable resort, providing comfortable accommodation while preserving the natural surrounding.

WALKWAYS

An extensive network of elevated walkways link the cabins with the main reception, restaurant area and the beach, allowing free movement of guests while preventing soil erosion and minimising disturbance of existing vegetation. . More than 10kms of batu timber and 4.5 kms of koppers logs were used to build the 1.2km walkway around Eco Beach. That is eight roadtrains of timber. As well, 1,400 railway sleepers are being used to build a walkway through the sand dunes to the beach and to provide kerbing for 1km of road. 60 tonnes of jarrah and wandoo timber were used to build this walkway.

200 TONNES RECYCLED TIMBER

In all, nearly 200 tonnes of recycled timber and 30 tonnes of new wood has been used in the $1 million development which cost more to fit out than to build. Energy requirements have been met by an independent power system based on solar and wind energy. Fresh water is pumped from a bore by a traditional windmill.

Guests can get to Eco Beach by boat (27kms across Roebuck Bay from Broome) or by bus (130kms from Broome). Both journeys taking around 90 minutes. Transfers by sea (every other day) cost $60.00 return and the daily four-wheel-drive road trip costs $40.00 return. Few people had ever put foot on the beach until the roads from the old cattle tracks off Highway One were upgraded. It was thick scrubland before building in early 1995 and the cabins have been built where there were no trees.

Eco Beach log cabins only have the bare essentials, such as beds and a few drawers. Showers are a walkway or two away. They have no roof, but a starry night and the ocean view more than makes up for that..

NO HUSTLE OR BUSTLE

It comes back to a simple, natural environment, away from the hustle and bustle of town and city life. Apart from reading, sunbathing and fishing (the nearby Jack's and Yardoogarra creeks are teeming with fish and mud crabs), there is plenty to do in and around Eco Beach.

Itineraries have been developed for a number of guided nature-based tours investigating the local flora, the numerous bird and animal species in the area and the marine life in the waters of Roebuck Bay. Fishing and snorkelling trips are available & have a strong educational focus.

Accommodation at the resort will cost $60.00 per cabin twin share on weekdays and $80.00 at weekends, plus $10.00 for each additional person (the cabin sleeps four). Breakfast, lunch and dinner are at pub prices.
