THE BOOMERANG
The Legend:
"A long long time ago in the dreamtime, a warrior named "Jamaru" looked
from his fire to see his wife "Kabalda" disappearing over the hill, dragged by a man from a
neighbouring tribe.
A storm was blowing fiercely and it was impossible to give chase.
On the storms third day, Jamaru became angry at the storm spirit, and took a bent firestick and threw it with all his might to frighten the storm spirit away. The storm quietened away and his firestick had hung in the sky for a long time.
When he looked towards the hillside, where Kabalda had gone missing, she
was coming towards him with a big mud turtle and goanna.
He never forgot the good luck his firestick had brought, and always after; when he needed food or was angry at an enemy, he fashioned the
same stick and threw it with great accuracy.
Thus the legend of the first boomerang..."
The origin of the boomerang goes up with prehistory. It is in Australia
where it developed the most, indeed the throw of the boomerang is derived from
a usual practise from certain aboriginal tribes. Because of its relatively
low weight, it does not have a sufficient impact and was never used as arms.
The throw was simply a play extremely appreciated by the aboriginals.
There are two kinds of boomerangs, returning and non-returning. Returning
boomerangs are the well-known type. They were used only in eastern and
western Australia for recreation and in tournament competitions. The
returning boomerang is generally considered to have derived from non-
returning boomerangs which swerve in flight. The particalar boomerang
offered here at Souvenirs Online is the returning boomerang. It is made
of the wood from the foot of a tree in a triangular plate. These boomrangs
are often used in pairs as musical accompany during ceremonies.
