Discovering the outdoors in Margaret River

Abseiling, rock climbing, canoeing and caving - just some of the ways that Outdoor Discoveries, an outdoor activities and education company based in Margaret River, in Western Australia's South West region, can get visitors in touch with the region.

Specialising in delivering safe and exciting outdoor experiences to small and medium sized groups, the firm has fully qualified and experience instructors.

The abseiling and rock climbing programs take place at the Willyabrup sea cliffs that are about 20 minutes north of Margaret River and 15 minutes south of Dunsborough. These spectacular cliffs rate as one of the premier abseiling and rock climbing sites in the South West.

Abseiling for a half-day costs AUD70 per person and provides an introduction to the basic principles of abseiling including all safety aspects.

The full-day abseiling and/or rock climbing costs AUD100 per person. In the morning the half-day program is followed while after lunch you are introduced to the principles of rock climbing.

In the stunning Boranup Forest

Caving programs in the stunning Boranup karri forest 20 minutes south of Margaret River. There are a large number of wild caves where you don helmets and head torches for real adventure caving. Caves range from walk-through caverns with spectacular formations to tight squeezes guaranteed to get you dirty. There is a minimum of two people required and the minimum age is 10 years old.

Abseiling and caving for a half-day costs AUD75 per person, while the full-day program costs from AUD110 per person.

Besides the standard caving programs, there are a number of different caves that require abseiling into solution pipes. Dingo Cave is an excellent cave for small groups with outstanding crawling experiences and small but stunning formations. Mill Cave is a phenomenal interpretive cave with unique soil cones, cave fauna and some skeletal remains.

Arumvale Cave has a huge abseil in and is an incredible interpretive experience with soil layering dating back thousands of years. Calgardup Cave has a tight squeeze abseil into the darkness before exploring the Window Extension that is one of the best caving experiences in the South West.

Adventure caving is AUD75 per person for a half-day and from AUD110 for a full day.

Canoeing on the Margaret

Canoeing programs are run on the Margaret and the Blackwood Rivers. The Margaret River is a beautiful and scenic river that is perfect for a quiet paddle. The Blackwood River is much larger and has a number of rapids to provide a challenge!

Canoeing on the Margaret River is from AUD65 per person and includes a gourmet picnic lunch optionally with Margaret River wine.

Canoeing on the Blackwood River is from AUD70 per person and includes a gourmet brunch.

The Blackwood River is a large river and the paddling is physically challenging. There is at least four hours of paddling required. In summer there are few rapids, however, winter months definitely provide excitement.

There is a fair chance that you will get wet especially in winter.
