EARLY MAP OF AUSTRALIA |
||||
|
Dutch explorers of the early 17th century
named the western coast of Australia "New Holland." The name
was commonly used to describe the entire continent until the early 19th
century. This map, part of a larger map of the Pacific Ocean, is
believed to date from the early 1800s. Few general maps before 1820
depicted the southern coast of Australia or the Bass Strait that
separates the Australian continent from Tasmania.
