Duty free
concession
If you are a traveller aged 18 or over you are allowed to
bring some duty free goods into Australia. This allowance includes any
goods bought overseas or duty/sales tax free before leaving Australia.
You may bring the following goods into the country duty free:
$A400 worth of goods - this does not
include alcohol or tobacco. Travellers under 18 years of age have a
$A200 limit. This include items such as cameras, electronic
equipment, leather goods, perfume concentrate, jewellery, watches,
sporting goods, etc.
1125ml alcohol (including wine, beer
or spirits) for travellers aged 18 years and over
Tobacco - 250 cigarettes, or 250
grams of cigars/tobacco products other than cigarettes for
travellers aged 18 years and over
Most personal items such as new
clothes, shoes, personal hygiene articles
Goods you have owned and used for at
least 12 months (proof of date of purchase may be required)
Members of the same family
travelling together can combine their individual duty free allowances.
Note:
Gifts (given to you or intended for others) are counted as part of the
$A400 duty free allowance.
Food
Australian customs is also very
particular about food being brought into the country. Simply because the
country through its geographical isolation has been spared from many
plagues that now easily travel with food being brought from
abroad.
Meat, vegetables, fruits and egg products are for instance a no no.
It is wise to declare any food being brought in as they regularly use
sniffer dogs in the luggage area, and if they catch you with undeclared
food, it could result in a hefty fine.
