Duty free concession

If you are a traveller aged 18 or over you are allowed to bring some duty free goods into Australia. This allowance includes any goods bought overseas or duty/sales tax free before leaving Australia. You may bring the following goods into the country duty free:

  • $A400 worth of goods - this does not include alcohol or tobacco. Travellers under 18 years of age have a $A200 limit. This include items such as cameras, electronic equipment, leather goods, perfume concentrate, jewellery, watches, sporting goods, etc.
  • 1125ml alcohol (including wine, beer or spirits) for travellers aged 18 years and over
  • Tobacco - 250 cigarettes, or 250 grams of cigars/tobacco products other than cigarettes for travellers aged 18 years and over
  • Most personal items such as new clothes, shoes, personal hygiene articles
  • Goods you have owned and used for at least 12 months (proof of date of purchase may be required)

Members of the same family travelling together can combine their individual duty free allowances.

Note: Gifts (given to you or intended for others) are counted as part of the $A400 duty free allowance.

Food

Australian customs is also very particular about food being brought into the country. Simply because the country through its geographical isolation has been spared from many plagues that now easily travel with food being brought from abroad.
Meat, vegetables, fruits and egg products are for instance a no no.
It is wise to declare any food being brought in as they regularly use sniffer dogs in the luggage area, and if they catch you with undeclared food, it could result in a hefty fine.
