Located southeast of the Domain just north of William Street, Kings Cross is Sydney's answer to Market Street in San Francisco or Soho in London. Yet amid drug users, prostitutes, nightclubs, and "spruikers" (doorkeepers loudly proclaiming the merits of their establishment to passersby) are some good restaurants, popular cafés, and reputable shops. The seedy Cross area is slowly but surely becoming gentrified as
"the Loo," the Woolloomooloo district to the north, continues
to expand its housing areas. The Cross is probably safe enough to walk
in at night unless you're alone. There are about 100 restaurants, 35
coffee shops, and accommodations ranging from backpacker hostels to
five-star hotels. Kings cross is also the place where
travellers to Australia buy and sell their used cars at the car market.
In fact local residents and car dealers aren't even allowed to sell
here.
