Whale watchingwhale watching in Hervey bay

Hervey Bay is considered one of the best places in the world to view Humpback whales which visit its waters between August and October each year, when the whales are on their way back to the Antarctic after spending the winter up North and giving birth.

They can also be spotted on their way up North round April, but August is generally the best time because this is when the whales stop with their newborns to feed.

Fishing
Fishing is a favorite pastime of many regular visitors. Try the beach gutters, reefs offshore from Waddy Point or the still waters of Great Sandy Strait. Bury all fish offal at least 30cm under the sand below high water mark to avoid attracting dingoes.

Some beaches are closed to fishing during tailor spawning season in September.

Dingo warning:

Dingoes on Fraser Island are wild animals and can become aggressive. On your visit be dingo smart:

  • never feed dingoes
  • pack away food scraps and rubbish
  • never leave food inside your tent
  • keep fish and bait off the ground
  • stay close to your children and walk in groups
  • do not encourage or excite dingoes; watch quietly
  • report any incidents to the rangers

Dingo

Fraser Island's dingoes are likely to be the purest strain in Australia. Help them remain one of the island's natural wonders.

Maheno ship wreck
Washed ashore during a cyclone in 1935, the Maheno is today an impressive wreck just north of Happy Valley. Drive along the eastern beach for a good view. This wreck is probably the most photographed attraction of the Fraser island. Danger: do not enter or climb on the wreck.Maheno shipwreck

In her day the S.S. Maheno was the pride of the Union Steamship Company's trans Tasman fleet, crossing in 1907 from Auckland to Sydney in two days 21 hours, setting a record that was to stand for 25 years.  She was wrecked whilst being towed to Japan for breaking up.

Nature
Fraser Island is World Heritage listed.

There are more than 40 lakes on the island, each with special appeal.  Some are windows into the water table, but the majority are in effect, giant rainwater puddles held in hollows in the dunes by a layer of sand rendered impermeable by reed humus rotting into it over centuries.  All the lakes have dazzling white sand beaches, and the best known is Lake McKenzie, inland from Eurong.

Best time to visit
Fraser’s subtropical climate is best in spring, with warm, sunny days and cool nights. Summer is hot, with average coastal temperatures 22–28deg, frequent thunderstorms and biting March flies. Autumn and winter bring cool, usually dry, days and nights, with temperatures ranging from 14–21deg on the coast, and cooler inland.

Campgrounds are often crowded and beaches busy during school and public holidays.

Tip: Visit the information centre at Central Station to learn more about the island’s past and present.
