One
of Australia's premier wine producing areas. A mix of several
different cultures with the influences still evident in the towns.
Much of the Barossa can be explored by bicycle and hiking. The
region's main event is the Vintage Festival from easter Monday on
odd numbered years but there are numerous other festivals. Lyndoch
is at the southern end of the valley and has the nearby
Pewsey Vale Homestead and the unusual Museum of Mechanical Music.
Tanunda is in
the centre of the valley and has relics of its German origins
around Goat Square. Early settlement of the valley is on display
at the Barossa Valley Historical Museum. Several fine old churches
reflect the different denominations. The scenic route to Angaston
via Bethany and Menglers Hill is recommended. Nuriootpa
is the commercial centre, and is at the northern end of the
valley. Angaston has an English history and the National Trust
listed Collingrove Homestead is a popular visit.
